THE SOULS OF COWARDS
Guilty of “incitement of insurrection” on January 6, 2021, yet “The Disgraced, Twice Impeached Former President Donald Trump”, once again eludes justice with another get out of jail free card, given by the majority of the Houdini escape artists that reside in the Republican Party. Putting party and self over country, offering no consequences for the storming of the Capitol that was organized and led by the leader of the free world. The fact that some republicans were themselves complicit, made it harder for them to say “guilty” for fear of incriminating themselves along the way. So they did what villains do. They used their evil powers to free the mastermind, while trying to free themselves.
Voting ‘Not-Guilty’ When Guilty
The most disturbing and despicable part of the day, was not defense attorney Michael van der Veen lying his way through closing arguments, but rather Mitch McConnell. At first I was confused, wondering if I was hearing his words correctly, as he echoed in agreement the House manager’s arguments nearly verbatim, just moments after voting ‘not guilty’. His cowardly hat hung on a ‘jurisdictional technicality’ (the constitutionality of trying a president no longer in office); a question that had been decided days before in the Senate chamber, allowing the trial to proceed. The Senate’s decision was made, done, and over. But, when Mitch didn’t like the result, and the will of the Senate, he (and others) couldn’t accept it — just like the election.
And I’m glad that the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, came out to speak after the verdict. She set the record straight, saying: “It was so pathetic that Senator McConnell kept the Senate shut down so that the Senate could not receive the Article of Impeachment and has used that as his excuse for not voting to convict Donald Trump.” Moscow Mitch’s speech was cringeworthy, as he described his best friend’s wrongdoing as a “disgraceful, disgraceful dereliction of duty” and being “morally responsible for provoking the event”. True to form, the cowardly McConnell hid behind the mess he helped create, waiting until after the vote to acknowledge the truth. Hiding under the veil of self deception, maybe to feel less guilty himself, all the while ignoring his history of walking lockstep with his bestie, The Disgraced, Twice Impeached Former President Donald Trump.
Oddly Familiar
There’s a familiarity to this kind of trial in the Black community. All the evidence is there, the guilt is proven, and the bad guys go free. Then asking: “why can’t you pull yourselves up by your own bootstraps?” while still holding the scissors used to cut off those very bootstraps. I thank the House managers for the outstanding job that they did and thank the seven republican senators, who joined democratic senators in standing on the side of justice, making this the most bipartisan impeachment in our nation’s history. I was particularly proud watching Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett and Congressman Joe Neguse, representing examples of why some try to silence our voices — intelligence, honesty, integrity and poise in people of color is quite intimating for those who lack the same.
Censure? Puhleeze!
And now the suggestion of censure. I can’t close without quoting the power of Speaker Pelosi with intensity: “All these cowardly Senators who couldn’t face up to what the president did, and what was at stake for our country are now going to have a chance to give a little slap on the wrist. We censure people for using stationary (as she holds it up) for the wrong purpose. We don’t censure for inciting insurrection that kills people at the Capitol.”
